What is Neurodiversity?

Check out this article on neurodiversity from Harvard Health Publishing by Nicole Baumer, MD, MEd, and Julia Frueh, MD. Here are some of the questions I am frequently addressed, and how this article answers them:

Q: What is neurodiversity as an idea and to whom does it apply?

“Neurodiversity describes the idea that people experience and interact with the world around them in many different ways; there is no one "right" way of thinking, learning, and behaving, and differences are not viewed as deficits.

The word neurodiversity refers to the diversity of all people, but it is often used in the context of autism spectrum disorder (ASD), as well as other neurological or developmental conditions such as ADHD or learning disabilities.”

Q: How should I talk about neurodiversity when I am talking with someone who is neurodiverse? I don’t want to offend.

“Rather than making assumptions, it is best to ask directly about a person's preferred language, and how they want to be addressed”

Q: How can I make my workplace more inclusive for neurodiverse employees and clients?

  • Accommodate sensory needs (e.g., noise, lights, fidgets)

  • Use clear communication

  • Assume positive intent if workplace etiquette mistakes are made

  • Give advanced notice with reasons if plans change

  • Don’t assume — instead, ask

  • Be patient and kind
